I installed Ubuntu eee on my 900 a couple of days ago and so far I'm very pleased with it. I did have some trouble initially with sound. From what I read the torrent file isn't really your best option when downloading the installation iso, go for the direct download instead.
However there are some parts I find a bit sluggish but since I have a freedom of choice it's simply a matter of choosing what I want to run.

I've recently switched to Ubuntu eee from the default Xandros linux my eee 900 came with. It runs smoother, has new apps and everything just works. The netbook remix interface is really very useful for small screen netbooks. You dont have to constantly fiddle with screen sizes. Highly recommended. I wrote about my switch also over here: http://www.fishandcross.com/blog/?p=659.
