Merry Christmas from My Asus Eee

Here’s wishing you and your families a blessed Christmas.

So, who got an Asus Eee as a Christmas gift this year? Or, who gave out Asus Eee units as gifts? Or perhaps you bought yourself the Asus Eee as your gift to yourself this season.

Would be interesting to know how many people had the Eee on their Christmas wish list.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year, Angelo! :-)

Just curious, though. Have you gotten “apt-get update” to work? I can’t seem to connect (even if I can surf the web naman). Thanks!

Hi Manuel. Are you using sudo, or are you at least running apt-get update from a root shell (i.e., by running “sudo bash”)?

No. Too expensive as gift to anyone but myself. :-) It would really make a nice present to any computer literate friends or relative though you would have to be quite wealthy to consider it. So that counts me out at present. Bought one for myself but that’s a bit before Christmas, so not exactly a Christmas present.

Merry Christmas to everyone. Eventhough it’s past Christmas, may the spirit and essence of Christmas be with everyone of us everyday. Let Him know that we remember Him everyday, not just Christmas. Happy Birthday, Jesus.

    Hi Angelo,

I pressed Ctrl+Alt+T, then typed “sudo bash”, then typed “apt-get update” — and saw the message about having a hard time connecting.

But I could surf to that updates site, and was even able to download the dist files via http. Then I’m stuck, because I don’t know what to do with the http-downloaded file.

Anyway, I really wish the apt-get update would work on the unit I’m using.

    Thanks,
    Manuel

There could be something wrong with /etc/apt/sources.list. Make sure the file doesn’t have excess spaces below or above the source lines. Or you can try manually typing in the sources again. Maybe you copied/pasted some characters that aren’t supposed to be in the file.

Thanks, Angelo. Will read up more on Linux. All this copy/pasting is making me nervous.

I was able to find Kwrite but I wasn’t able to download gFTP. Can you provide me info on getting it. Need it to upload or revised webpages. I got mine as a gift for myself and so far i’m loving it. Eee PC is a whole different breed of laptop.

    Hi Mark and Manuel,

You can install gFTP by adding the Xandros and/or debian repositories to your /etc/apt/sources.list:

deb http://xnv4.xandros.com/xs2.0/upkg-srv2 etch main contrib non-free

    or

    deb http://http.us/debian.org/debian/ stable main

    and then run:

    sudo apt-get update

    and then

    sudo apt-get install gftp

That would install gFTP on your system.

After this, be sure to remove the repositories you entered, and run

sudo apt-get update again, to be sure you don’t break your Xandros installation. I’m not sure if it’s in the Xanros repositories, but most likely you can get it direct from the Debian repository cited above..

I chose between an iPod classic and an Asus eee and the latter won. That’s where all of my 13th month pay went but I think it’s worth it even if I’m just starting to learn about linux and xandros.

Can you recommend a good book or a site where I can read up about these things?

    Thanks and happeee neeew yeeear!

I’m thinking of buying the cheapest version I can find for my mom. It has to be very easy to set up, and relatively inexpensive. Originally I thought of getting a refurb or my hand-me-down. Would appreciate help teaching me if this is set up for a dial-up connection in Manila - she is mostly house-bound. Thanks for the help

    Happy new year Jangelo!
My sons shared an Eee for Christms, but I didn’t get mine while the 7th of January. I’m busy sticking my life into the Journal and the PIM and I’m posting this on my 3e of course. My kids are setting high scores on bubble pop and tux racing on theirs.
Can’t reccomend http://www.Eeeuser.com highly enough, a great community where you cn get your hands dirty, if you want….
