New Year, New OS (Jolicloud Pre-Beta, to be exact)

launcher

I finally went through with something I was planning a few months back. I installed a Linux distro on my Asus Eee PC 701. Actually, the main reason I didn’t push thru with installing Linux is that I didn’t want to leave the comfort of a Windows installation. I know there are a lot of Linux fanboys among you readers, but I really depend on Windows a lot and I really can’t afford turning Linux into my main operating system.

Once I was able to get my hands on a brand-new laptop, I didn’t hesitate removing the Windows XP installation on my Asus Eee PC so I can put Jolicloud on it. As I have the only the 4gb Eee PC, I went for the Pro Install. I downloaded a Jolicloud ISO and was able to quickly mount it on a flash drive. The Jolicloud website has the easiest instructions, and because of that I was able to get Jolicloud up and running on my mini laptop in no time. More »

RunCore 64GB SSD on the Asus Eee PC 901

Test Freaks recently was able to replace the built-in SSD on the Asus Eee PC 901, benchmark it.

Now, installing it (on the 901 at least) is a breeze, because you can just use the built-in screwdriver to open your 901′s guts and remove the current 4GB SSD. Putting it back in would be the easiest thing in the world I would presume. Well, according to Test Freaks, it’ll just take two screws, and then we’re ready to go. More »

Nostalgia Eeextra: The first-ever Eee PC unboxing video

Okay, I missed the second birthday of the Eee PC, which happened last November 5. But to make up for it, here’s the first-ever unboxing video of the Asus Eee PC. Enjoy, everyone?

Asus UL30A: Unboxing and first impressions [Video]

Brad of Liliputing was able to get his ands on Asus’s snazy new 11.6-inch laptop, the Asus UL30A.

Digsby is now netbook-friendlier

As you may have noticed, I’ve been complaining more and more about my Eee’s increasingly faltering reliability in keeping apps running. I know, the 701 wasn’t made for multitasking, and that I should really upgrade my netbook.

So I ditched Pidgin for Miranda IM, and frankly, even if that IM client has been stable, it’s so barebones I felt like I was back in 1999.

That was until I heard that Digsby, formerly the memory hog of web IM software, has cut its usage by 50%. So I reinstalled it, and yes, it is working way faster than ever!

I still haven’t uninstalled Miranda in case Digsby goes wonky on me, but so far it’s been good to me.

Should I switch back to Linux? What distro should I go for?

So I’ve been using Windows XP on my ancient Eee 701 for almost a year now. I’ve had no complaints with it. Well, not until lately. Somehow Firefox has been crashing on me so much that it’ll be a miracle to surf the web without my favorite browser crashing on me within an hour. I tried to use Chrome, but somehow it gave my beloved Eee a bout of BSODs that disappeared after I uninstalled it. Frankly, I’m getting fed up with all the software crashes I’ve been getting here.

It’s gotten so bad that I’m planning to switch back to Linux after months of convincing myself that Windows XP is the way. Now the question is: what distro should I use? I’ve been hearing good things about CrunchEee, but I want to make sure I’m getting the best Eee-made distro out there.

What do you guys think? Help me out here, and recommend a great Linux distro for me.

Eee PC 1000HV High Definition Mode

If you’re wondering what the High Definition mode on the 1000HV does, Liliputing has the answer for you:

It overclocks the Intel Atom processor to give your system a slightly better chance of decoding HD movies with the aid of the Eee PC 1000HV’s  included ATI Radeon GPU. So for those keeping score, here’s what happens when you use the Super Hybrid Engine in several different modes:

  • Power Saving: 1.2GHz clock speed
  • High Performance: 1.6GHz
  • Super High Performance: 1.7GHz
  • High Definition Mode: 1.8GHz
