Jolicloud Netbook OS

jolicloud

If you want to try another OS meant for netbooks, then you should definitely check out Jolicloud when it comes out in 2009. It seems to be a Linux-based OS with an emphasis on cloud computing.

The founder of Netvibes is behind this project, and there isn’t much information about the project so far. But who cares, the more attention netbooks are getting, the better, right?

Save space on your Eee with Eee PC System Shrinker

Back when the Eee community was just starting up, when we wanted to install Windows XP on our Eees we had to rely on the Eee User Wiki to make sure our Windows installation runs as smoothly as possible. Every tweak we ran on the Eee we had to do manually, and it sometimes took a full day to finish optimizing XP for the Eee. It was fun, of course, but when we had to do the same tweaks repeatedly on different netbooks, it started to become tedious.

Asus apparently thought of us who had to do the same tweaks over and over again, because they released a small utility called Eee PC System Shrinker that scans your system for unnecessary files that you can delete to free up space.

Turn your Eee PC 701 into a Tablet PC with Aeeeris Tablet

For those who want to hack their Eee into a tablet PC, the Aeeeris Tablet hardware kit enables you to turn your Eee into a tablet PC. It lets you scoop out the guts of your netbook and put them into a tablet-style frame.

The kit will set you back $60, and touch screens aren’t included. However, you can build your own Tablet PC for around $400 or less, which is a lot less money than you’d pay for most tablet PCs on the market.

Do You Use a Windows Shell Replacement?

Windows Eee users, I’m just thinking. With the vast number of shell replacements out there, is there a lightweight one that works well for the Eee? The default shell, as good as it may be, sometimes isn’t just good enough.

So Eee users, what shell replacements do you recommend?

gOS Cloud

gOS has finally come up with a cloud version of their Ubuntu-based OS, and it’s good. Personally, I’m not willing to let go of XP on my netbook after all the hacks I did to it, but I am tempted to just wipe out my Eee and put in gOS on it. Here’s a video demo of gOS by the way, for those who want to see what it does:

Intel: Netbooks not a laptop replacement

Intel mae two interesting points at a recent conference, and Brad from Liliputing sums it up nicely.

  • Intel had originally expected netbooks to work well for developing markets, but the bulk of netbook sales are now in developed nations like the US and European countries.
  • Netbooks, with their small screens and keyboards are fine if you want to use them for an hour or so, but you probably wouldn’t make it your primary computer.

Netbooks weren’t made to be a laptop replacement in the first place, no matter how much you claim to not use any computer at all after getting a netbook. I, for one, use a netbook most of the time in lieu of a more powerful PC, but it’s out of necessity, not for anything else. Besides, I find myself finding more and more ways to figure out how to hack the Eee to do the tasks I always do. With a more powerful laptop, hacking is unnecessary.

So guys, don’t treat your netbooks as “the little computer that could”. Try “a mini-laptop that I could get by because I can carry it around everywhere”.

Upgrading the Eee PC 701 processor

processorSomeone on tom.com posted a quick tutorial to upgrade the processor of the Eee PC 701 with an ULV PM 753 1.2G 2M L2 cache processor.

Doing this of course will definitely void warranty, but if anybody here is willing to do this, tell me how it works out. Steps are detailed here.

Having a hard time with your Eee keyboard? Use ClicKey

ClicKey is a Windows application that provides the necessary tactile feedback that the Eee keyboard lacks at times. The Eee keyboard, being small, sensitive, and too silent, sometimes lets you miss a few letters or even double-type in a couple of letters.

You can just download the app, and run it. No need to install anything. If you want this to run automatically, just drag a shortcut in your startup programs. My only gripe with this program is that it does not mimic an actual typewriter sound.

eee-control for Linux lets you overclock your Eee

I’m on XP on my Eee PC and I’ve been using EeeCtl for as long as I’ve installed Windows on it. For our fellow Eee users who prefer to use Linux, however, there’s eee-control, an easy-to-use utility that aims to be a one-stop solution for all special Linux Eee PC needs.

eee-control allows you to configure hardware and hotkeys, switch between performance levels (very much like Asus’ Super Hybrid Engine) and more.

Currently the models 701/701SD, 702, 900, 900A, 901 and 1000/1000H are supported.
