Eee PC Commercial; A Battery Life Rant

Ok, this is a nice commercial, but… 8 hours battery life? Anybody here ever got close to 8 hours on their Eee PCs?

ASUS Eee 1000H available for $339.75

And is it time for Eee price drops? The 1000H has its price dropped drastically. In fact, NewEgg is selling the 1000H for only $399.75, way down from the original $550. And it’s even got a larger hard drive.

1000H

For that price, you get:

  • 1.6GHz Intel Atom CPU
  • 10.2 inch, 1024 x 600 pixel display
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 160GB hard drive

Now is the time to pick up a 1000H, if you ask me.

ASUS denies plans to phase out smaller Eee PCs

A few days ago, it was reported that ASUS will begin phasing out their 7 to 8-inch Eee PCs to make the 10-inch Eees the standard. Apparently, ASUS CEO Jerry Shen was misquoted.

According to ZDNet,

a spokesperson for Asus told ZDNet UK that the Taiwanese firm would continue to bring out seven- and 8.9-inch Eee PC models. The spokesperson added that netbooks of these sizes were due a “refreshment on the specifications”, suggesting that new versions of these models could be on the way.

Well, if that’s the case, then we’re looking forward to it.

Eee PC 900/901 Touchscreen Kit on eBay

I want a touchscreen Eee. That much everyone knows. But I don’t want to go through the hassle of opening and soldering my Eee so that I’d get the much-wanted touchscreen. Thankfully, some enterprising soul made this DIY touchscreen kit for the Eee 900/901 and Acer Aspire One. The great thing about this is that it’s solder-less, so I don’t have to get my hands dirty in modding my Eee. For $99.95, you get:

  • 4-wire analog resistive screen
  • touchscreen response time < 10 mins
  • high transmittance >85%
  • 25 points linearity position with edge compensation
  • 3 USB 2.0 ports
  • supports 11 languages for Windows

Sounds really good, if you ask me.

$200 ASUS Eee?

ASUS is aiming to release a $200 Eee by 2009, according to Digitimes. jerry Shen, Asustek presidemt, detailed that the company has adjusted its mid-range and entry-level Eee PC’s pricing and market position, and expects to launch an Eee PC priced at US$200 in 2009.

He is also optimistic that lowering manufacturing costs will bring down the price of future Eees. Shen also pointed out that 7- and 8.9-inch Eee PCs will be slowly phased out of the market to be replaced by 10-inch products.

If we get a $200 10-inch Eee, it will be absolutely wonderful.

Eee PCs Run Windows 7 Well

Laptop Mag was able to run Windows 7 on an Eee 1000H, and surprisingly, Windows 7 ran on the Eee with just a few hiccups. Well we actually shouldn’t be surprised, because Microsoft did show that Windows 7 ran on the Lenovo S10 without a hitch.

And Laptop Mag has made the following observations:

  • Boot time is 58 seconds
  • Windows 7 looks and feels like Vista so far
  • network manager has been improved since Vista
  • video playback is smooth
  • light on system resources

Looks good so far. Let’s cross our fingers and hope that Windows 7 will be just as light as the pre-beta version they installed on the Eee 1000H.

Will You Help ASUS & Intel Design a New Netbook?

Because going to WePC.com and participating there will help ASUS and Intel know what you want with their next netbook. According to the site:

ASUS and Intel have created WePC.com, a place where users like you come together to share ideas, images and inspiration about your ideal PC. But what if it’s not just talk. Your designs, feature ideas and community feedback will be evaluated by ASUS and could influence the blueprint for an actual notebook PC built by ASUS with Intel inside.

Looks really interesting, and I will definitely try it out.
